Match Report - Woodbank U7 v WSC U7 (Friendly)

Saturday 27th March 2010  - played at Nuttall Park

With WSC having no league fixture until the second week in April we managed to arrange a Friendly Fixture with our friends and former colleagues at Woodbank.

Despite heavy rain over Thursday and Friday (Jon, I hope your weather has been better in the USA!) we were grateful for the breeze and sunshine that allowed the game to go ahead at Nuttall Park.

WSC were missing 2 of their Academy Players in JJ and Alex but the boys worked hard to continue their successful season. WSC hadn't scored a goal in their previous 2 fixtures and prior to Kick Off the team talk was all about the boys making the most of their opportunities and not relying on the regular goal scorers of Bailey and William to produce the goals.

The game started off tightly with chances few and far between. captain for the day Han was outstanding at the back but is was the midfield general Samuel who produced the performance of the day.

WSC managed to get the first goal thanks to a great 25 yard pass from Samuel, with Bailey finishing in the corner. Shortly after Nathan hit the bar from distance with a great shot and then WSC doubled the lead with Samuel producing a stunning effort that looped over the keeper into the top left corner.

Woodbank have really improved over the season and showed fantastic commitment to pull two goals back in quick succession after the break, to be honest it could have been worse but Luke produced some fine saves to deny the home side.

Being a friendly fixture it allowed the management to try out players in different positions, Michael tried hard at right back helping William down the wing, Elijah was much more settled in left midfield having had a stint as striker and Nathan went close to scoring having been put up front!

The game looked like it could have finished a draw but it was the Player of the Match Samuel who got the winner, showing great anticipation to finish a loose ball in the box.

A Penalty Shoot Out proved to be a close affair, the first 8 penalties either being brilliantly saved or going just over. Luke proved to be the penalty king once again though producing some stunning saves (equally matched by Woodbank’s keeper) and hitting the winning penalty.

A fantastic game by bot teams - looking forward to the league fixture!

Parents Man of the Match - Samuel Well Done to everyone.
