Saturday 27th February 2010 - Played at Town Meadow Tottington
After another Friday of bad weather (rain this time not frost!) the opportunity to get a home match seemed unlikely, however with Towns Meadow WSC have a pitch that seems playable no matter the weather!
It has been several months since the team trained on the ground and with Ken and Phil's Under 9's team bagging a dozen goals earlier that morning our Under 7's must have been expecting a few goals themselves!
A massive crowd (in excess of 35!) turned out to support both teams, if it was goals they were looking for I'm afraid it was the defences that ruled the game.
A tight first half brought few chances, Luke was probably the busier of the 2 keepers but he was well protected by the magnificent Nathan, and with Han given the job of man marking the Panthers star player Ethan, the first half ended 0-0.
The second half was much the same, unusually for WSC the final pass just didn't seem to reach, the impressive Man of the Match Elijah showing some silky skills and a great eye for a pass releasing Bailey and William who tried hard to add to their already impressive goals tally. Bailey had the best chance of the match but his bending free kick hit the post instead of going in.
This was the second match against the Panthers in the space of 3 weeks, and once again the game was played in an excellent spirit. At the final whistle the game was 0-0 (unusual for a match at this age level) - all credit to both keepers and the defenders.
The managers got together at the end of the match and decided to finish with a penalty shoot out for a bit of fun.
This gave Luke the opportunity to shine - he did not fail! He started proceedings by taking the first kick - it nearly broke the back of the net! and set the standard for WSC's remaining penalties. Luke is really developing as a keeper under the coaching of Marshy and his agility was demonstrated as he saved 6 out of 10! WSC going on the finish scoring 7 out of 10 (no doubt this will stand us in good stead for future tournaments).
A great game and thanks go to Panthers for the way they played and to Steve Rhodes for yet another faultless refereeing display
Crowd Attendance - nearly 40
Parents Player of the Match - Elijah Cooke
